On Saturday I was invited by the Wadsworth Atheneum to shoot their monthly Last Saturday family event (which soon will be dubbed Second Saturday) featuring guest artist William Wegman and extra special guest Weimeriner named Bobbin. It’s sort of intimidating when you’re told that you’re going to be shooting a photographer. Had I had the opportunity to photograph Cindy Sherman, who’s sort of like my artistic hero, I probably would have fainted.
But the day was so busy and full of intrigue – since it’s not ever day you see a dog in a museum – that my nerves did not get the best of me. I’ve been doing this for long enough that I can get into go mode pretty quickly. I love standing back and capturing what’s in front of me, while I’m terrible at approaching people and talking to them. I tend to keep my distance. Kids are amazing to shoot. They’ll let you know right away if they’re into the camera or not. Mostly, they’ll pose/smile for the camera, or immediately cover their face and hide. Both kinds are fun to interact with. The icing on the cake was running into my college photography professor, Ellen Carey. What a fantastic time. I hope to work with the Wadsworth again in the future.
